My teacher, Miss Maggie, wrote this book, and it is based on our own true story. Yeah, you don't know her yet. That's because she wrote herself out of the story. She said one teacher was enough for this book. See, she had to change a few things to make a good story even better. And overall, I think she did a pretty good job, even if it did take her five years to write it all down.
I just have a couple of things to add-- Number one, I knew we ESL kids could pull off the play, even when everyone else thought we couldn’t. I just needed time to make it all happen and especially to deal with Mrs. Bronwyn Bowers. |
Besides, if Gordo and I had gotten kicked out of school, we would have snuck back in to go on with the show. I don’t think they can arrest kids for sneaking into school, can they? If they had, Chuy could be my lawyer, since he knows pretty much everything about standing up for your rights. All the other guys would help out, too, and probably even Silvia and Gwen would stick up for us.
Second, Gordo was a true hero for giving everlasting redemption to Tristan Bowers after all the mean things Tristan Bowers did to him. Making someone feel like he's a big, fat dummy is the worst. It can make you feel hopeless, and my sister Hortensia's magazines say that is not at all good.
But Tristan was truly sorry, and now we understand him better. In fact, he's being pretty nice these days. But still, Gordo was a hero to forgive him, and in my opinion, he should get a gold medal for it.
Thirdly and lastly, doing this play and all the others helped me stay away from the kind of stuff my big brother El Lobo got tangled up with. By now, I’ve been in lots of shows and have liked every single one of them, even if I wasn't the main character. Every part is important, right? Sometimes you have to work together.
And even though this Shakespeare stuff seems super hard, we just grabbed onto Mr. William Shakespeare and made him our own. And that turned out to be a very good deal. In fact, if I could, I would tell Mr. William Shakespeare, his four-hundred-fifty-year-old superpowers are still strong. And I would thank him, because he changed my life forever.
